Leo Kornbrust was born in St. Wendel in 1929. After completing his apprenticeship as a carpenter and then as a wood sculptor, he benefited from a scholarship from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship Foundation) and studied with Toni Stadler at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1951 to 1957.

In 1957 he met the writer Felicitas Frischmuth and traveled with her through Europe. They got married in 1958 and settled in Munich, where he had his studio and a bronze casting workshop. In 1959 he received a scholarship for the Villa Massimo in Rome, where he stayed with his wife for a year. In 1960 the couple returned to St. Wendel.

In 1971, he initiated the first International Sculpture Symposium in the State of Saarland, held in his hometown St. Wendel. A few years later, he initiated the realisation of a Road of Sculptures.
From 1977 to 1994, he was a professor of sculpture in combination with architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
After his retirement, he devoted more time to his peace project.
In 2004 he founded the „Straße des Friedens – Straße der Skulpturen in Europa – Otto Freundlich Gesellschaft e.V.“ Association and focused on the networking of peace projects across Europe.

Leo Kornbrust received numerous awards and scholarships, for example he became a member of the Humboldt Society in 1989, received the German Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1998 and was elected a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1999.
